Taper bushings usually spend most of their service life out of sight inside a pulley, sheave or sprocket. That makes condition-based inspection more useful than a fixed calendar replacement interval. The same model can run in a clean indoor fan drive or a dusty reversing conveyor, and those two connections do not age at the same rate.
A practical maintenance program watches for movement, fretting, corrosion, keyway wear and repeated loosening. It also checks the surrounding drive. Replacing a bushing without correcting shaft wear, misalignment or a damaged hub often turns the next bushing into the next failure.

Signs a taper lock bushing needs attention
Red-brown fretting debris, polished witness marks, a key that has started to hammer, cracked material, stripped threads or a connection that repeatedly shifts position all justify investigation. Do not treat repeated re-tightening as normal maintenance; the shaft, hub, keyway or operating load may be outside the intended condition.

Cleaning and lubrication decisions
Keep mating surfaces clean and follow the specific installation instructions for the bushing in service. Do not add grease or anti-seize to taper faces just because another joint on the machine uses it; friction and clamp behavior are part of the connection design. If the approved procedure calls for a particular thread condition, preserve that condition when replacing fasteners.
For wet or corrosive environments, focus on preventing water and contamination from reaching the joint and on selecting an appropriate material or finish. A surface treatment does not compensate for a damaged taper or incorrect fit.
Replacement interval: use condition and duty
There is no defensible universal “replace every X years” rule for a taper bushing. Seasonal agricultural equipment may be inspected during off-season service, while a continuous conveyor may be checked whenever the drive is opened or abnormal vibration is recorded. High-consequence machines usually deserve a more conservative inspection plan than noncritical auxiliary drives.

Planning spare bushings
For critical drives, record the EP series, bore, keyway standard and mating hub rather than stocking an unlabelled “similar” bushing. A spare is only useful when its interface matches the installed component. Keep photographs or dimensional records for older machines whose markings are fading, and store fasteners with clear model identification when they are part of the replacement set.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a fixed replacement interval for a taper lock bushing?
Not from the bushing alone. Base replacement on machine duty, inspection findings, service consequences and the equipment maintenance plan.
Should I simply tighten the screws if the bushing moves?
Repeated movement calls for inspection of the shaft, keyway, hub, fasteners and alignment. Re-tightening without finding the cause can hide a developing problem.
